Richard Gere sure flipped things off a notch on Today this morning.

After Savannah Guthrie shared a clip of Gere in the upcoming spy thriller The Agency on Wednesday’s show, the American Gigolo star proceeded to give her the middle finger on the air, much to Guthrie’s surprise, per People.

Though Gere clarified “that’s what [he] did in the piece” before the clip cut out, Guthrie was quick to call him out.

“You just did an obscene gesture on this family morning show,” she exclaimed.

While she teased that she was “bleeping” him, Guthrie brought up Cher‘s viral moment dropping the F-bomb in a conversation with Hoda Kotb on the NBC morning show on Tuesday (Nov. 19), an instance that admittedly “scared” Kotb.

“You know, Cher was on here doing an F-bomb yesterday, so I don’t know what’s happening!” she quipped.

Gere doubled down on his explanation, noting “that’s what the clip was,” which prompted Guthrie to say that they “cut that part out.”

“I could see that, but it didn’t make any sense without that,” Gere added.

Gere said it was “the first time” he had seen this footage. As for why, he teased to Guthrie that he “do[es]n’t like seeing [him]self very much.”

“I think in general, actors are not really keen on looking at themselves,” he shared.

He also praised the “wonderful cast” of the “well-written” new series, which is set in the London office of the CIA and is based on the French series Le Bureau des Legendes.

The first two episodes of The Agency begin streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime on Friday, Nov. 29.
