Today‘s Jenna Bush Hager and Savannah Guthrie were seriously inspired by Halle Berry‘s viral “smooch” with Adrien Brody on the Oscars red carpet this weekend.
Guthrie, who guest hosted Today‘s fourth hour Monday (Mar. 3), and Bush Hager watched the viral clip of Berry striding up to Brody on the red carpet before kissing him, recreating the viral kiss they shared in 2003 when Berry presented Brody with the Best Actor award.
“I watched it over and over again because that’s what you do when you’ve been married 20 years,” Bush Hager joked. She later added that she would love to have Berry back on the show after she “fell in love” with the actress when she last visited. “Maybe she’ll come back and we can recreate that,” she wondered.
“You could recreate the kiss?” Guthrie asked her co-host and best friend. She then appeared to stop herself from saying something else. “I just, never mind. I just had a thought,” she announced.
Bush Hager appeared to know what she was going to say as she warned Guthrie, “I know, you can’t say it.” But Guthrie couldn’t help admitting: “I was like, should we kiss?”
They shared a laugh together as Guthrie waved her hands and walked back her suggestion. “No, I’m kidding, I’m kidding! I want to come back to the show!” Guthrie added.
Bush Hager playfully admonished her good friend for the wild suggestion. “Yeah seriously my moms watching! And so is your’s,” she reminded Guthrie.
“Oh God, even more horrifying,” Guthrie responded. “Nancy and Laura! We won’t.”
This broadcast marked the first time Guthrie has helped co-host the fourth hour of Today. She currently co-anchors the earlier hours of The Today Show with Craig Melvin, who replaced Hoda Kotb after her retirement.
Guthrie and Bush Hager are close friends in addition to being godparents to each other’s children, and their friendship truly showed through during Monday’s broadcast of Today. Guthrie not only made fun of Bush Hager’s age, but she also pressed Bush Hager about having more kids after she revealed she recently dreamt that Bush Hager was going to have a fourth baby.
“Do you have anything to announce?” Guthrie asked Bush Hager, putting her in the hot seat.
Bush Hager appeared to play along as she turned to the camera with a more serious expression.
“You guys, drumroll please,” she announced, before bursting into laughter with Guthrie. “No, no. We just love a drum roll. No, I have nothing to announce. I’m pretty sure I’ve come to terms that three, even though it’s an imperfect number, it’s the perfect number for our household.”
