NextImg:Saquon Barkley shows why Giants are ‘ecstatic’ he’s back after long contract talks

Daniel Jones’ initial read was not open and the play turned into a scramble drill.

It was a hot Wednesday morning for the first Giants practice of training camp and the quarterback, working in a 7-on-7 drill, rolled to his right and looked for his guy.

Saquon Barkley.

Jones fired a pass into the right corner of the end zone, a fastball that was going to be hard to handle.

Barkley, at full speed, reached out with both arms, full extension, and snared the ball in his two hands, with safety Xavier McKinney trailing by a half-step as the touchdown completion was secured.

After nearly 10 months of negotiations that ultimately did not lead to the multiyear contract he was seeking, Barkley was back with the Giants, back on the field, doing his thing.

“That was a great play he made there on the sideline,’’ Jones said. “Yeah, he makes a difference when he’s out there. He makes a difference with his play and how it feels and his leadership, his communication and bringing guys along. Great to have him out there.’’

Barkley was out there because on Tuesday he agreed to a one-year deal that will guarantee him the franchise-tag salary of $10.1 million for running backs, with Barkley able to inflate his 2023 earnings to $11 million if he hits incentives for rushing (1,350 yards), receiving (65 catches) and touchdowns (11).

The caveat here is none of the incentives gets triggered unless the Giants make the playoffs.

The much-anticipated holdout by Barkley never materialized.

He did not speak on Day 1 about his presence at camp or his largely fruitless contract battle with the Giants, but it was evident everyone on the scene was relieved and glad he made it in on time.

“We’re ecstatic, fired up that Saquon’s going to be here for the start of camp,’’ general manager Joe Schoen said.

It was Schoen who held the line on the Barkley contract, reflecting the downward financial turn for NFL running backs.

The Giants made three offers to Barkley — one at the bye week last November, one after the 2022 season and one last week as the deadline came and went to sign a player on a franchise tag to a multiyear extension.

“Why wasn’t it able to get done?’’ Schoen said. “We talked for over nine and a half months, and we came to a landing spot, and they came to a landing spot, and we couldn’t bridge the gap. That’s OK. Saquon has to do what’s best for him and his family, and I respect the hell out of Saquon. I’m never going to tell somebody to do something that they don’t think is right.’’

This is the start of Schoen’s second year as a general manager and this offseason he opened the coffers for Jones (four years, $160 million) and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence (four years, $90 million) before another big splash on Wednesday, with left tackle Andrew Thomas signing a five-year extension worth $117.5 million.

Barkley turned down a multiyear deal that would have guaranteed him $23 million.

“There’s a personal side, of course,’’ Schoen said. “You get to know these guys throughout a season. They go to work every day. They work hard for you. That is part of it. There’s a human element to it. In this situation, we weren’t able to come to an agreement and that’s OK. I’ve been in this for 23 years and sometimes deals get done, and sometimes they don’t.’’

Schoen said he spoke with Barkley at the start of camp and did sense any frustration from the 26-year old running back.

“We’re a better football team with Saquon here to start training camp,’’ Schoen said.

There was no argument from anyone on that.

“Because he’s a very good player and a good leader for us,’’ coach Brian Daboll said. “I have a great amount of respect for him, great amount of appreciation and love for him, and glad he’s in the building. I know his teammates are glad.’’

At the end of practice, Barkley and safety Xavier McKinney engaged in a familiar debate: Who won the day? Barkley, of course, said the offense had the upper hand.

“It’s just one day, it’s the first day of training camp so I wouldn’t get too excited,’’ McKinney said, laughing.

“He’s a hell of a player,’’ McKinney said. “He’s one of those guys where he is a generational talent and just glad to have him.’’

Barkley after staying away from the entire voluntary spring workout program aced his conditioning test, allowing him to participate in the first practice.

“We’re obviously thrilled to have him back,’’ Jones said. “It was a tough situation for him and I’m glad we got it worked out. He’s an incredible leader on this team, he’s an incredible player and means so much to this group. It’s huge to get him back.’’
