Good Morning America weatherman Sam Champion issued a dire warning to viewers after announcing doctors detected a new bout of skin cancer recently.

Champion appeared on GMA Friday (Oct. 18) with a scar under his left eye as he warned viewers to remain vigilant about wearing sunscreen and seeking treatment for any “unusual” marks. The morning show aired footage of Champion getting the mark removed in early October after doctors discovered it was nodular basal cell carcinoma.

“I hope that one day no one has to go through surgery to get rid of skin cancer, but, right now, we have to keep our eye on our skin, our hands on our skin, be very vigilant and notice any unusual spots, and if those spots start to change, immediately get care,” he said.

Champion revealed the cancer was “larger and deeper” than he had expected.

Though he’s suffered from “blistering sunburns” throughout his decades-long career of reporting outdoors, Champion explained that he wouldn’t think to “leave home without putting on sunscreen” now after undergoing extensive treatment for skin cancer over the years.

“No matter how old you are — my first one was at 26 — no matter what your skin tone, your skin type, your skin color, they’re cutting skin cancer off of everybody,” he said. “So, it’s everybody’s issue.”

Champion also gave a thorough demonstration on GMA on how to apply sunscreen to the face, scalp, and more.

“When I’m not bringing you the weather, I love nothing more than being outside, but these days I wouldn’t think about going outside without sunscreen. It wasn’t always the case,” he said.

The GMA host is already looking forward to what’s next.

“The next phase of my journey will be scar care and trust me, there’s a lot of advancement in that as well,” he said while urging viewers not to worry about the appearance of scars after getting unusual marks removed.

Champion has been open about his skin cancer journey over the years. In 2010, he even underwent surgery live on GMA.

Good Morning America airs weekdays 7/6c on ABC.
