The Saints’ offense has taken another blow.
Running back Eno Benjamin ruptured his Achilles during training camp on Saturday, Saints head coach Dennis Allen revealed, and it’s likely Benjamin will miss the 2023 season.
Less than 24 hours before, lead running back Alvin Kamara was suspended for three games by the league for his arrest after his involvement in an assault in Las Vegas while he was in town for the Pro Bowl.
“I was completely wrong,” Kamara told reporters.
He will miss games against the Titans, Panthers and Packers.
Kamara pled no contest last month to a misdemeanor charge of breach of peace, which allowed him to avoid felony battery charges, and by the terms of the plea agreement, he is required to complete 30 hours of community service and pay $105,000 for medical expenses for the victim.
Without Kamara, the Saints were planning to lean on Benjamin, free-agent signed Jamaal Williams, and third-round pick Kendre Miller.
However, now they’re one more man down with the running back responsibilities falling on Williams and Miller.
Benjamin, 24, spent the 2022 season with three teams — the Saints, Cardinals, and Texans — and was preparing to start his second season with New Orleans.
The second-year running back was drafted by the Cardinals in 2020 in the seventh round, and across his 24 games played in his career, he has gained 431 yards and three touchdowns along with 111 carries.
In the 2023 season, Benjamin will be watching from the sidelines while the Saints evaluate their options one month before the start of the season.
