The Sag Harbor Village police chief is accused of being the village idiot.
Top cop Austin J. McGuire was suspended without pay for 30 days for insubordination, misconduct, and incompetence, according to town documents.
The Sag Harbor Village Board suspended McGuire on Dec. 1 while they probed a laundry list of alleged incidents that occurred from Dec. 1, 2020, through July 2 this year — including that he appeared in public “intoxicated, impaired, or under the influence of alcohol” both on and off duty.
McGuire, who makes $209,000 annually, became a top cop in January 2016.
The scandal is a pockmark for Tony Sag Harbor, the home or former home of designer Calvin Klein, actress Gwyneth Paltrow, and former Met Keith Hernandez.
Village Mayor Thomas Gardella confirmed he filed 32 disciplinary charges against the 52-year-old chief, who has been on leave for months.
He’s also being accused of “creating low morale,” “exposing subordinate officers to harassment” and “creating a hostile and/or uncomfortable work environment,” according to the town filing.
“You conducted yourself in a manner that brought discredit to the Sag Harbor Village Police Department,” reads the village charging documents.
“These were very serious charges brought by our employees,” Gardella told The Post on Friday.
“We’re a small village. This process is going to be a difficult one because there’s a lot of close interpersonal relationships,” the mayor said.
“Your conduct was insubordinate, unbecoming, disrespectful, and unprofessional.”
He is also accused of “attending to personal affairs and pursuits while on duty.”
Gardella said “There are witnesses” to McGuire’s boorish behavior.
The chief could be canned if he is convicted following an upcoming hearing.
Gardella said the process could last “three to six months.”
“Of course, he’s going to get due process,” the mayor said.
McGuire previously worked 18 years with the East Hampton Town Police Department and rose to the rank of lieutenant.
He did not return messages.
