While Stranger Things fans anxiously await Max Mayfield’s return, star Sadie Sink is keeping her fans well-fed with O’Dessa, a new original musical now streaming on Hulu.

If you didn’t already know that Sink has the voice of an angel, you’ll know it for sure after you stream this sci-fi musical adventure, set in a post-apocalyptic future. Sink stars as O’Dessa, a rural farm girl who sets out to “ramble” the world like her father, aka travel and perform music like a troubadour, using her father’s very special—and possibly magical—guitar. Along the way, she encounters both true love (a fellow performer named Euri, played Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and true evil (a sadistic game show host named Plutonovich, played by Murray Bartlett).

Written, directed and compose by Geremy Jasper (known for his 2017 drama Patti Cakes), O’Dessa is a true sci-fi rock opera that feels like it’s straight out of the 1980s. That includes the O’Dessa soundtrack, which is full of powerful rock anthems, love song ballads, and country-inspired blues tunes. But shrewd movie audiences know that sometimes, stars don’t always sing their own songs. (Zac Efron in the first High School Musical, I’m looking at you.) So is that really Sadie Sink singing in O’Dessa?

Sadie Sink sings all of her own songs in the O’Dessa movie. In fact, before she was Max on Stranger Things, Sink was a young Broadway musical theater star, including playing the lead role of Annie in Annie on Broadway from 2012 to 2014. Of course she sings her own songs in O’Dessa!

In an interview for the O’Dessa production notes, the film’s writer, director, and composer, Geremy Jasper, explains that he knew Sink was perfect for the role when he received a video of Sink performing one of the songs in the film, “Yer Tha One.”

“The song was out there, and Sadie got her hands on it,” Jasper said. “She filmed herself playing and singing and sent it off, and I just got it as a text message from someone and it blew my mind. I’d been working on the film at that time for four years, and I didn’t know if it was ever going to get made. I didn’t know if I was ever going to find O’Dessa, and then I saw her.”

In the same production notes interview, Sink called O’Dessa “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” She said of her character, “O’Dessa’s at a crossroad in her life where she’s stepping into womanhood, and she has an intense freshness and curiosity. She’s a woman of very few words and pretty quiet, so how she really communicates is through her music. That’s her greatest superpower.”

In fact, Sink performs a grand total of 10 songs in the films, some of them alongside her co-star Kelvin Harrison Jr., who also sings in the movie. Read on to see the full track list for the O’Dessa soundtrack, with original songs written by Geremy Jasper and Jason Binnick.
