Ryan Reynolds also is sounding the alarm about Turner Classic Movies after the network was hit with a slew of layoffs yesterday.
TCM laid off plenty of its top leadership team June 20, according to IndieWire, which reports that those affected include Executive VP and General Manager Pola Changnon, Senior VP of Programming and Content Strategy Charles Tabesh, VP of Brand Creative and Marketing Dexter Fedor, VP of Enterprises and Strategic Partnerships Genevieve McGillicuddy and VP of Studio Production Anne Wilson.
Reynolds shared IndieWire’s article on Twitter yesterday (June 21), where he wrote, “Turner Classic Movies has been a fixture in my life for as long as I can remember. It’s a holy corner of film history — and a living, breathing library for an entire art form. Please don’t fuck with @tcm.”
But Reynolds wasn’t the only Hollywood heavyweight concerned with TCM’s fate — Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Paul Thomas Anderson joined forces to issue a statement after the layoffs and restructuring left fans worried for the network, whose library includes gems like Gone With The Wind, Casablanca and The Color Purple.
After news broke that parent company Warner Bros. Discovery laid off multiple TCM leaders, the unlikely trio of cinema titans scheduled an emergency meeting with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, per IndieWire. The directors later released a joint statement saying they felt “heartened” by their conversations with the executive.
“We have each spent time talking to David, separately and together, and it’s clear that TCM and classic cinema are very important to him,” their statement reads, per The Hollywood Reporter. “Our primary aim is to ensure that TCM’s programming is untouched and protected. We are heartened and encouraged by the conversations we’ve had thus far, and we are committed to working together to ensure the continuation of this cultural touchstone that we all treasure.”
The directors also note that they “understand the pressures and realities of a corporation as large as WBD, of which TCM is one moving part.”
Decider previously spoke with Changnon, the Executive VP and General Manager who was affected by the layoffs, about the network’s rebranding and strategy for the future.
“What we’re gaining is a more contemporary lens on these movies,” she told us in a 2021 interview. “These movies have had influence on the culture for decades and continue to do so. These movies are in our cultural DNA because they’ve shaped the movies that came after and shaped how people dress and talk and what music they love.”
Changnon had been with the network for over 25 years before her departure.
Now, Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Discovery Family and Boomerang, will lead the network.
