NextImg:Russell Westbrook-Clippers reunion seems unlikely

Russell Westbrook’s stint with his hometown Los Angeles Clippers may have been short lived.

NBA executives believe that free agent point guard Russell Westbrook could attract offers of around $10-15 million annually, but according to Mark Medina of The Sporting Tribune, the Clippers may not be one of those teams willing to pay the guard such a large sum of money.

“Will that recent history be enough to back up both parties’ sentiments with actual actions? Westbrook would love to stay in his hometown with an organization that made him feel comfortable, but the Clippers can only pay him up $3.8 million to stay,” Medina wrote. “Other NBA executives around the league believe Westbrook could still attract offers worth $10-$15 million per season.

“The Clippers may not have offered that money even if they had the space. Despite gushing about how Westbrook upgraded the point-guard position, the Clippers still tried to acquire Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon last week only for the deal to fall through after becoming concerned with his injury history.”

The Clippers signed Westbrook back in February after the former NBA MVP was bought out by the Utah Jazz after he was traded prior to the trade deadline from the Los Angeles Lakers.

During Westbrook’s time with the team, he put up 15.8 points, 7.6 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.1 steals as a starter for the squad in the regular season. During the postseason, he boosted his averages up to 23.6 points, 7.4 assists and 7.6 rebounds in the team’s first-round matchup against the Phoenix Suns.

However, the guard has been seen as an outcast in NBA circles for a while, as Westbrook has seen a steady decline in production since his lofty heights during his time in Oklahoma City, Houston, and to a lesser degree, Washington.

Westbrook signed a five-year contract worth well over $200 million prior to of the 2018-19 season, but the nine-time All-Star has suited up for five teams throughout that same five-year stretch.

While no longer an All-NBA caliber guard, Westbrook still brings a certain level of competitiveness to any team and can still contribute at a starting level — expect him to be signed within the first few days of the free agency period.
