RuPaul’s Drag Race winner James Ross, who won the show in Season 2 as drag queen Tyra Sanchez, was arrested in May after getting into a minor car accident and allegedly threatening to shoot a police officer.
An arrest report obtained by TMZ claims Ross began yelling at police when they showed up to the scene after the performer got into a car accident with another driver. He allegedly threatened to shoot a police officer when they tried to handcuff him.
Police also deployed a taser on Ross after he allegedly reached into his car, per TMZ. He later managed to run away, after which he was arrested for simple assault on a police officer and resisting an officer without violence.
Entertainment Weekly reports the 35-year-old performer was later taken to Bradford County Jail.
The arrest occurred on the evening of May 17 in Starke, Florida.
Per EW, Ross addressed the rumors surrounding their May arrest in a tweet shared on Saturday. “I actually just woke up after exhaustion from my trip to Boston where I attended my son’s high school graduation,” he tweeted. “You can stop with the rumors and speculation.”
He was previously arrested in 2020 for spray painting “Don’t move here ever” on the side of a building where he lived in Atlanta.
Ross took the crown in RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 2 in 2010, earning the $25,000 prize.
He later retired the title of Tyra Sanchez in 2020 in a social media post, saying he “no longer [wanted] to be referred to as Tyra, Tyra Sanchez, her, she, girl, or queen.”

Prior to his retirement from drag, Ross also stated he no longer wanted to be associated with the show. “Stop tagging me in your posts, stop including me with your winners. Just forget me,” he tweeted in January 2020.
He later took on the name of King Tyra on OnlyFans in 2022 before he brought back the title Tyra Sanchez earlier this year.
