Rory McIlroy was all business after news of his divorce filing emerged on Tuesday afternoon.
The Northern Irishman, 35, was seen on the driving range at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville as he prepares for the PGA Championship, which tees off on Thursday.
McIlroy’s PR team confirmed with the Irish Independent that he and his wife, Erica Stoll, were indeed getting divorced after seven years of marriage following a TMZ report.
“They stressed Rory’s desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment,” the report stated.
McIlroy and Stoll, who worked for the PGA of America, were first linked in 2014 after he broke off his engagement with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
They share a 3-year-old daughter, Poppy.
The Independent noted that there were subtle signs of trouble between the couple.
Stoll was absent at The Masters as McIlroy finished tied for 22nd.
And on Mother’s Day on Sunday, McIlroy paid tribute to his mother on social media, but there was no mention of Stoll.
Still, there were no significant reports or rumors of angst between the two.
While McIlroy goes through some difficulties in his personal life, he is thriving on the course.
Following the disappointing performance at Augusta, McIlroy has captured two straight wins at the Zurich Classic — partnered with Shane Lowry — and at the Wells Fargo Championship.
The two victories netted McIlroy nearly $5 million.
“Quail Hollow, Charlotte in general has been really good to me over my career and this is just another great day to sort of add to all the rest of them,” McIlroy said of the Wells Fargo win, per Golf.com.
“I feel like these people have sort of watched me grow up from winning here as a 20-year-old to being the ripe old age of 35 now. They’ve sort of seen my progression throughout my career, and I’ve been lucky enough to win here four times. The support that I get here is absolutely amazing.”
McIlroy will speak to the media on Wednesday ahead of the second major of the season.
