NextImg:Rory McIlroy refuses to putt until rowdy Ryder Cup fans ‘shut up’ as he hits boiling point

It seemed to be a moment that had been building up since the start of Saturday, as the rowdy crowd at Bethpage Black turned its sights squarely on Rory McIlroy.

The Northern Irishman appeared to reach his tipping point on the sixth hole in the afternoon session as the American fans loudly chirped him as he was preparing to line up a putt.

McIlroy was seen on the broadcast telling a referee that he’s “not going to putt until they shut up.”

Rory McIlroy was fed up with the American fans — again.

The fans started to boo more as McIlroy was down examining the putt before lining up his putt, only to back off after another person shouted as he was about to hit the ball, leading to even more boos.

McIlroy looked even more frustrated as partner Shane Lowry came over to try and settle him down.

McIlroy waited until things settled down and the crowd had quieted.

The comments from the crowd had become so much on the sixth hole that American Justin Thomas had to intervene, according to Sports Illustrated

Golf Digest’s Joel Beall reported that McIlroy was upset with security for not monitoring the crowd, and in a follow-up post on social media, Beall detailed what he had seen with McIlroy after the afternoon round started.

“Walked with the group for the past 2 hours, I’ve never heard so many F–k Yous to anyone, let alone a golfer, as they’re about to pull the trigger,” he wrote. “Things about wife/family, Pinehurst, general “You Suck” comments. Shane getting bombarded with weight jokes.”

Sky Sports reported that some American fans were ejected from the Ryder Cup grounds.

Extra security and uniformed police have been added to McIlroy’s match, according to the NBC broadcast.

In another wild scene, Lowry was called a “Teletubby” after hitting his approach shot on the previous round.

McIlroy told fans to “shut the f–k up” earlier in the day when he was shouted at while getting ready to hit a shot.

“I don’t mind them having a go at us. Like that’s to be expected,” he said after the morning session. “I mean, that’s what an away Ryder Cup is. Whenever they are still doing it while you are over the ball and trying to hit your shot, that’s the tough thing. You know, look, in between shots, say whatever you want to me. That’s totally fine.

“But just let us — you gave us the respect to let us hit shots, and give us the same chance that the Americans have, I guess.”
