Cam Whitmore is starting his Rookie of the Year campaign early.
Fans surely know the Rockets rookie after he won Summer League MVP and led his team to the championship game before falling to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Whitmore believes his first taste of NBA competition is only the tip of the iceberg – and there’s one goal at the forefront of his mind coming into the season.
“I’d definitely say an individual goal of mine is to win Rookie of the Year,” Whitmore told ESPN’s Malika Andrews on “NBA Today.”
“I definitely have that coming and can probably be in the competition to win that. Not just the skillset, but the confidence overall. I have the biggest skillset in the draft right now, and I think I’m the most different type of athlete, an explosive type of athlete that nobody in the draft has seen before.”
The No. 20 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft was at one point projected to be a top-five selection, but eventually slid far outside the lottery to the Rockets

Despite the draft-night fall, Whitmore’s confidence has never wavered.
Growing up, Whitmore’s dad told him he was “destined for greatness,” and the forward put that on display throughout the summer league play as he put up 20.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and three steals a night en route to winning MVP honors.
Still, he’ll have some stiff competition to be the NBA’s top rookie this season.

Whitmore has the sixth-best odds (+4000) to win Rookie of the Year according to FanDuel, behind the first four selections in the draft, including Spurs big man Victor Wembanyama and Whitmore’s own Rockets teammate, Amen Thompson.
