NextImg:Robert Saleh explains his Jaguars sign-stealing comments after postgame kerfuffle with Liam Coen

Robert Saleh tried to clarify comments he made last week after he said the Jaguars were “almost elite” at “stealing” other teams’ signals, telling reporters on Tuesday that he was “genuinely” attempting to “give a compliment” to Jacksonville.

The comment led to a brief, heated exchange between Saleh and Jags head coach Liam Coen after Jacksonville’s win over the 49ers on Sunday.

The former Jets head coach wanted to clear the air this week when he met with the media.

“As a coach, watching their tape, I recognize the amount of hours that must be spent to be able to build formations and define every little indicator they can to give their players a chance to be in a successful position,” Saleh said.

“That’s exhausting, and every team does it. Some do it better than others and it was my way of acknowledging that these guys are really, really, really good at it,” he continued. “And, like I said, Sunday doesn’t change that. I think Liam’s doing a hell of a job, I really do.

“You can tell that that team’s really taking on his personality and I hope they came out of the game healthy, and I wish him the best of luck throughout the rest of the season. I wish I could have found a better choice of words, but my intent was always to compliment that football staff.”

Saleh also said that he had not reached out to Coen and added that things were “all good.”

The comments that set off Coen stemmed from Saleh saying last week that the Jaguars had a “really advanced signal-stealing type of system,” while also making sure to note that he did not think Jacksonville was doing anything against the rules.
