ARLINGTON, Texas — Now what?
That has been the Jets mantra since the start of training camp, but now it really will get tested.
Aaron Rodgers, who was the center of the Jets’ universe for the past eight months, has been lost for the season.
Now the Jets have to turn back to Zach Wilson, the quarterback who lost their trust last season.
From the outside, their Super Bowl hopes vanished when Rodgers sat down on the MetLife Stadium turf unable to put any weight on his left leg thanks to a torn Achilles tendon.
But the Jets (1-0) figured out a way to beat the Bills without Rodgers and now must figure out a way to beat a tough Cowboys (1-0) team at AT&T Stadium on Sunday.
To the Jets, reports of their demise are premature.
“I don’t know why people are trying to put an obituary onto our team’s name,” head coach Robert Saleh said. “Aaron is an unbelievable piece to this whole thing and we love him, but I think there’s 52 other guys in the locker room plus the 16 practice squad guys that believe that we can do a hell of a lot of good things here.
“We have a championship caliber defense, we’ve got great skill guys on the offensive side of the ball. Our O-line is going to continue to jell and get better, but we’re excited about our group. We’ve worked hard over the last couple of years, players, coaches, scouts, and GM building a pretty cool organization. So, there’s still a lot of faith in the locker room and the things that we can still accomplish here. So, while the outside world can go ahead and write whatever story they want to write, there’s still the true story being written in this building.”
The Cowboys are coming off a dominant, 40-0 win over the Giants in their opener. They had seven sacks and three takeaways in that game. Dallas’ defense is not the one the Jets need to see as they try to figure out life without Rodgers.
The Jets spent the week pumping up the idea that Wilson is a different quarterback than the one who bombed last season.
Wilson played well enough in relief of Rodgers on Monday for the Jets to secure the victory, but it is clear they will rely on their defense and running game and hope Wilson does not cost them the game.
The Jets had big plans for this season before losing Rodgers. Now what?
