NextImg:Robert Griffin III says Jets got ‘absolutely fleeced’ in Aaron Rodgers trade

The Jets may have won in the short term after acquiring Aaron Rodgers from the Packers, but Robert Griffin III believes New York got “absolutely fleeced” in the blockbuster trade.

The former NFL quarterback, 33, tweeted as much Monday after news broke that the Jets and Packers finally agreed on a deal that would end Rodgers’ time in Green Bay after 18 seasons.

“The Jets are BONAFIDE Super Bowl contenders now, but that doesn’t change the fact that they got ABSOLUTELY FLEECED on this trade. Packers are getting a better fist [sic] round pick this year, a 2nd rounder this year, and a more than likely 1st rounder next year for 1-2 years of Rodgers,” Griffin posted.

The Jets swapped their first-round selection in this year’s NFL draft, No. 13 overall, with the Packers, who were the owners of pick No. 15.

Green Bay will also receive a second-round pick in this year’s draft, No. 42, as well as a sixth-round selection, No. 207 overall.

The Packers also obtained a conditional pick in 2024 that can become a first-rounder if Rodgers plays 65 percent of the plays this season.

If not, the selection will be a second-rounder.

The Jets also walked away with a fifth-round pick, No. 170, in this year’s draft, which gets underway Thursday.

Rodgers is expected to take his physical on Wednesday, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday, “with plenty of time to make the trade official before the Draft.”

The Jets are also expected to pick up Rodgers’ guaranteed option bonus of $58.3 million, according to Rapoport, which will convert to a signing bonus for cap reasons.

On Monday, after months of speculation and rumors, the Jets and Packers came to an agreement on a trade that brings four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers to New York.

The trade immediately upgrades the Jets from rising team to playoff contender with the hopes that Rodgers will help break one of the longest active postseason droughts in sports.

The Jets receive: Aaron Rodgers, No. 15 pick (2023) and No. 170 pick (2023)

The Packers receive: No. 13 pick (2023), No. 42 pick (2023), No. 207 pick (2023) and a conditional second-round 2024 draft pick that conveys to a first-rounder if Rodgers plays 65% of the Jets’ plays in 2023.

The trade still needs to be finalized — the terms of Rodgers’ contract need to be worked out — and sent to the NFL.

Both teams will begin feeling this deal as early as Thursday at the 2023 NFL Draft.

For the Packers, it’s now about getting fourth-year QB Jordan Love ready to take over. With Gang Green, it’s about getting a whole host of new faces on the same page offensively.

The 39-year-old was out and about in Calabasas, Calif. when he got word of the trade, all smiles as he picked up coffee and groceries. For Rodgers and Jets fans, it’s hopefully just the beginning of their good times.

The quarterback will have a cap hit of $15.7 million for 2023.

Rodgers, a four-time league MVP, is coming off of a disappointing year in Green Bay in which the Packers finished at 8-9 and missed the playoffs.

The quarterback has been linked to the Jets throughout much of the offseason, even stating his intentions to play for the team during a March appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

As for the Packers, they’re ready to usher in the Jordan Love era — nearly three years after selecting him 26th overall.

When speaking to the media Monday, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst elaborated on why the Packers decided to move on from Rodgers.

“Aaron is obviously up there in age. I think he’s got some really good football left in him,” Gutekunst said of the quarterback, who turns 40 in December, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.

“As we got through the offseason, this made sense … Having (Jordan Love) sit for another year would’ve really delayed (his development).”

Love, who played college football at Utah State, had served as Rodgers’ backup.

He saw some action last season, most recently a 40-17 win over the Vikings in January.
