NextImg:Robert Griffin III calls for truce with Jay Gruden — but still has one last offer

Robert Griffin III and Jay Gruden have found something they can agree upon: It’s time to stop dredging up the past.

After an ugly week of finger-pointing about their poor runs in Washington, the two have agreed to a ceasefire.

“No more back and forth,” Griffin, 33, wrote on X on Friday. “We all make mistakes and the lessons learned from our past mistakes helps us all grow and become better. As they say, in life it’s not about what happens to you, it’s about how you respond. So thank God for it all. Show invite still stands @Coach_JayGruden.”

Earlier in the day, Gruden, 56, accepted some responsibility for not helping Griffin grow as a player, and he signaled he would not be talking much more about their time together.

“Moving forward, I’m sure Robert has more important things to talk about, and as do I,” Gruden said on the “Taking the Points Show.” “At the end of the day, I tried my best to make RG3 a good player and help him out but it didn’t work out.

“Now it’s time to move on.”

The feud stems back nearly a decade but was reinvigorated Monday when Gruden criticized the Eagles’ handling of Jalen Hurts, and Griffin responded by calling out Gruden’s handling of himself.

Gruden was the Washington head coach from 2014-19, inheriting a Griffin who would never reach the heights he showed as a rookie in 2012, when the signal-caller was an electric Pro Bowler but ended his season with surgery on both his LCL and ACL.

Griffin never was the same after the surgery — his legs no longer the same kind of weapon — and he struggled to adapt as a pocket passer.

Griffin played in nine games with Washington during a lost season under Gruden in 2014.

During that year, Griffin called out his teammates during a news conference that he now alleges Gruden put him up to doing.

According to Griffin, Gruden then “undressed me” at his own news conference for criticizing his teammates publicly.

Gruden said he doesn’t remember instructing Griffin to call out his team.

“I don’t remember telling Robert to go there and challenge his teammates, so that’s on me again,” Gruden said on the podcast. “I’ve actually regretted that press conference many times. That’s not the way you should handle your team in front of the media. That was my first time as a coach, and I handled it poorly in my opinion and a lot of other people’s opinion.”

Gruden has not been on the sidelines since serving as the Jaguars’ offensive coordinator in 2020, while Griffin — now an ESPN analyst — last played for the Ravens in 2020.
