Famed professional wrestler Terry Funk has passed away at 79. A cause of death is not yet known.
Funk began his wrestling career in 1965 for Western State Sports, the promotion ran by his father, Dory Funk, who was also a professional wrestler.
His longtime career spanned multiple wrestling promotions, including All Japan Pro Wrestling, United States Wrestling Association, and WWE, before he retired in 2017. Funk also had a brief stint in cinema, appearing in Road House and Over The Top. He also performed stunts for Rambo III.
Funk has also been inducted into multiple halls of fame throughout his career, including WWE, the World Championship Wrestling Hall of Fame, and the National Wrestling Alliance Hall of Fame.
His longtime friend, fellow pro-wrestler, and Beyond The Mat co-star Mick Foley paid a tribute to the wrestler on Twitter after hearing the news from Funk’s daughter.
“He was my mentor, my idol, one of the closest friends. He was the greatest wrestler I ever saw,” he wrote on Twitter. “If you get the chance, look up a Terry Funk match or a Terry Funk promo, and give thanks that this incredible man gave so much, for so long, to so many. There will never be another like him.”
Ric Flair also paid tribute to the wrestler, writing on Twitter, “In My Entire Life, I’ve Never Met A Guy Who Worked Harder. Terry Funk Was A Great Wrestler, Entertainer, Unbelievably Fearless, And A Great Friend! Rest In Peace My Friend Terry Funk Knowing That No One Will Ever Replace You In The World Of Professional Wrestling!”
In 2021, it was reported that Funk had been diagnosed with dementia and was living in an assisted living facility.
Funk is survived by his two children.
