John Amos, best known for his roles in Good Times and Roots, has died of natural causes. He was 84.

His son, Kelly Christopher “KC” Amos, announced the news in a statement. The esteemed actor reportedly passed away Aug. 21, per Deadline.

“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” KC said in a statement. “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over.”

KC’s statement continued, “Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.

“My father loved working as an actor throughout his entire life…. most recently in Suits L.A. playing himself and our documentary about his life journey as an actor, America’s Dad,” he wrote. “He was my dad, my best friend, and my hero. Thank you for your prayers and support at this time.”

John’s career began in 1970 with an appearance on The Bill Cosby Show. Much of his early career was in comedy, with several appearances on The Tim Conway Comedy Hour, The Funny Side and Maude.

His character on Maude received its own spinoff series in the 1974 sitcom Good Times, also from creator Norman Lear. The groundbreaking CBS sitcom focused on a low-income African American family living in Chicago. The role also coincided with stints on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Future Cop.

Other memorable roles of his included Die Hard 2, Coming to America and The West Wing. He was nominated for an Emmy in 1977 for starring in the ABC drama series Roots.

John also enjoyed a brief career in football at Colorado State University and, later, with the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL.

John’s family made headlines in recent years when his daughter, Shannon, accused KC of elder abuse and claimed her brother failed to provide efficient care for their father’s struggling health.

John denied the claims at the time, telling People in March, “I want to first say that I am feeling well and working diligently on various projects that I am involved in at this time, including the docuseries that my son and I are producing, along with a music release.”

He maintained that he is “proud” of his son and shut down his daughter’s allegations by saying, “This story about neglect is false and unmerited.”

The Los Angeles Police Department reportedly spoke to parties on both sides of the matter and officially closed the investigation in April after finding no evidence of wrongdoing.

Prior to his death, John was filming the Suits spinoff series Suits: L.A., which was ordered to series and will premiere on NBC.

John is survived by his children.
