NextImg:R.I.P. Jack Hogan: ‘Combat!’ Star Dead At 94

Jack Hogan, the actor best known for his role of Private First Class (PFC) William G. Kirby in the 1960s World War II drama Combat!, died of natural causes at his Bainbridge Island home on Wednesday (Dec. 6). He was 94. The news was confirmed to Variety by his son, West.

According to the outlet, Hogan was born Richard Roland Benson, Jr. on Nov. 24, 1929. Prior to launching his acting career, he received his pilot’s license when he was 16 and eventually joined the Air Force after graduating high school, where he served as a staff sergeant in the Korean War for four years.

Hogan made his film and overall on-screen debut in the 1956 Western Man from Del Rio, per IMDb. Outside of starring in 111 episodes of the ABC war drama Combat!, he made numerous TV guest appearances on shows like Laramie, Peter Gunn, Bonanza, The Outsider, S.W.A.T., Hawaii Five-0, and Magnum P.I., the last of which he also served as a member of the casting department from 1981 until 1983.

Film credits of his include The Bonnie Parker Story (1958), The Legend of Tom Dooley (1959), and The Cat Burglar (1961).

He earned his final acting credit by appearing in two episodes of the martial arts drama Raven between 1992 and 1993.

Combat! aired for five seasons on ABC from 1962-1967 and followed a squad of American infantrymen stationed in Europe. The show also featured the talents of Vic Morrow, Rick Jason, and Pierre Jalbert, among others.

According to Variety, Hogan is survived by his son West Hogan, his daughter Tehani Hogan, his nephew Kipland Howard, his ex-wife Joyce Nizzari, and his granddaughter Kai and grandson Skyler.
