Charlie “Griff” Griffin, known as Captain of the Reels of Fortune on National Geographic’s Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks, and his dog Leila were discovered dead on Monday (March 4) in the Outer Banks, per Deadline.

According to the outlet, his passing was verified by the “Reels of Fortune Wicked Tuna” Facebook page — named for his boat — which shared that he and Leila “passed away in a boating accident.”

“Please keep family and friends in your thoughts and prayers,” the tribute continued. “We will forever remember Griff!”

The Outer Banks Voice reported on Monday that “the US Coast Guard received a report of an overdue vessel traveling from Virginia to Wanchese, NC,” per Deadline.

“The 35′ vessel was subsequently located off Pea Island and the body of Charles Griffin Jr (Charlie Griffin) of Wanchese, NC and his dog (deceased) were recovered onshore near the same,” the report continued. “The vessel appears to have capsized somewhere near Oregon Inlet.”

A spokesperson for the Coast Guard relayed to The Virginian Pilot that at “around 11:35 p.m. Sunday, [they] received a report of two overdue boaters transiting in a recreational vessel from Virginia Beach to Wanchese, where the boat was going for repairs.”

Prior to that report, the Coast Guard had last heard word from the boat at “about 6:15 p.m. Sunday.”

Another individual was reportedly on the boat, but the search for them is still taking place, as they have yet to be found nor publicly identified out of “respect for kin,” E! News reports.

Fans of Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks will recognize Griffin from Seasons 2-5 of the reality series spin-off, which is streaming on Disney+. The spin-off, which was originally titled Wicked Tuna: North vs. South, originated from the flagship series based in Gloucester, Mass. Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks Season 2 aired in July 2015, per OBX Entertainment, and the series follows bluefin tuna fishermen like Griffin who set out to conquer the Outer Banks and “battle for the ocean’s most lucrative prize,” per the show’s synopsis.

National Geographic and Pilgrim Media Group issued the following statement to Entertainment Weekly in the wake of Griffin’s passing:

“Charlie was known to all as a spirited fisherman with a big heart. We join Charlie’s family, fellow cast members, and friends in mourning his untimely loss.”
