Carlin Glynn, best known as the mother to Molly Ringwald‘s Samantha Baker in the 1980s classic Sixteen Candles, died on Thursday, July 13. She was 83.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Glynn had been battling cancer and dementia prior to her passing.

Glynn’s other IMDb credits extend from her first on-screen role in the 1975 thriller Three Days of the Condor, to her most recent appearance in Law & Order: Criminal Intent in 2006.

In 1979, she made her theatrical debut on Broadway in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and for which she won a Tony Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical. Her husband Peter Masterson co-wrote the books for the musical, and also directed The Trip to Bountiful, which featured Glynn. She and Masterson were married until his death in 2018.

Mary Stuart Masterson, Glynn’s daughter who followed in her footsteps and also became an actress, shared a loving tribute in honor of her late mother on Instagram.

She wrote, “She was the most graceful clumsy person you would ever meet. Strong, smart, silly, intuitive, kind, generous, passionate and a deep listener. She was devoted to my father and to the enormous circle of students and collaborators who were considered her chosen family.”

Masterson also added that she was incredibly fortunate to be with her mother when she passed, and that she “will always be grateful for those last moments, no matter how hard.” She concluded the caption by writing, “Rest in peace, mommy.”

Other stars shared their condolences via Masterson’s post. The Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan commented, “Sending you and yours much love. Xxx,” and actress Maddie Corman wrote, “Oh Stu. Thank you for sharing her with us… with me. She was the most maternal being. Im deeply sorry for your impossible loss.”
