Alice “Tan” Ridley-Sidibe, a former America’s Got Talent singer and mother to actress Gabourey Sidibe, has died. She was 72.

Ridley died March 25 in New York City, according to her obituary. A cause of death has not been shared.

The prolific singer made it all the way to semifinals on America’s Got Talent in 2010 after charming the judges with her performance of the Etta James classic “At Last.”

Her obituary notes she also appeared in David LaChapelle‘s 2005 documentary Rize. She also competed in 30 Seconds to Fame in 2002, where she won $25,000, and later in Showtime at the Apollo in 2005.

She also spent decades performing in the New York City subways, often at Herald Square, where she reportedly attracted crowds of people. Her experience earned her an appearance as a subway singer in the 2005 drama Heights, starring Elizabeth Banks, Glenn Close, and James Marsden.

“I was a big secret,” Ridley told The New York Times in 2016 after years of busking. “With so many people passing by, I wondered, ‘Why doesn’t somebody introduce me to someone who could help me out?’”

Ridley later released her first studio album “Never Lost My Way” in 2016 at the age of 63, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Her daughter Sidibe became a breakout star after delivering an Oscar-nominated performance in the 2009 drama Precious, directed by Lee Daniels. She starred as Claireece “Precious” Jones, a pregnant teenager facing abuse from her mother (Mo’Nique) who gets a second chance when she’s invited to enroll in an alternative school.

The role launched her career, with credits in several television series and movies, including Empire, American Horror Story, The Big C and more.

Ridley is survived by her daughter and her son Ahmed Sidibe, as well as her daughter’s twin children, Cooper and Maya, among others.
