Priscilla Ono knows a thing or two about going big for fashion’s biggest night.
As a go-to member of Rihanna’s glam team — and a Fenty Beauty Global Makeup Artist — the beauty guru’s prepped the Bad Gal for many a memorable moment, including her iconic pope-inspired look at the 2019 “Heavenly Bodies” Met Gala.
But getting superstars ready for the fashion-filled fête isn’t all glitz and glamour, as the makeup artist — who recently teamed up with Secret deodorant — tells Page Six Style “how much work it takes just to do one day of work.”
“Especially for the Met, I feel like there’s so much pressure on the Met and there’s actually a lot of pre-glam moments,” says Ono, who spends days in advance “pulling references, testing products, going out to buy products” and refreshing and sanitizing her kit.
At the end of the day, however, it all culminates in a major beauty look — and an “emotional” moment for Ono.
“Where the car drops off the client, it’s always the same area like right by the red carpet,” she says. “You see your client walking down the red carpet … you almost want to shed a tear, like, ‘There she goes.’ I think those are to me the moments that matter the most.”
“[All of my my Met Gala looks] that I’ve done with Rihanna and with Normani — I feel like every Met Gala look is special in its own way,” Ono adds — although she kept her lips sealed about whether we’ll see some of her handiwork at this year’s gala.
As for what the makeup looks tonight’s coveted carpet might hold, however? ”I think just really classic, fresh, beautiful makeup, which is really nice because in the years past we’ve kind of done all this over-the-top makeup,” says Ono, who foresees lots of “pastel nude lips” and “classic red lips” for this year’s “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” theme.
Regardless what trends come and go, though, Ono’s makeup favorites include several tried-and-true essentials that won’t break the bank. Below, shop six of her red carpet-ready go-tos.
