NextImg:Rick Pitino throws first pitch at Subway Series to Donovan Mitchell

Rick Pitino has made plenty of recruiting pitches recently, so it only seems fitting that he’s now throwing literal ones.

Before Tuesday’s Yankees-Mets Subway Series opener at Citi Field, the new St. John’s head coach threw out the first pitch to Cavaliers star — and noted Mets fan — Donovan Mitchell.

Pitino seemed jazzed for his big moment hours before it happened, tweeting a picture of his head edited on Dwight Gooden’s body.

“Been practicing — hope I can regain this form from 5 years ago,” the coach tweeted with a two laughing emoji.

Pitino’s practice didn’t exactly pay off, as his pitch skipped into Mitchell before it even reached home plate.

But Mitchell, who played under Pitino at Louisville from 2015-17, hugged it out with his former coach and posed for some pictures near the mound.

It has been a whirlwind few months for Pitino after he left Iona for St. John’s less than three months ago.

The two-time NCAA Tournament champion has transformed the Red Storm’s roster, most recently landing former North Carolina signee Simeon Wilcher, giving St. John’s a late difference-making addition that further fortifies this roster.

“To have coach Pitino back in New York City is a big deal. Knowing everybody is going to love that, and to be part of that first group he has back in New York, means a lot,” Wilcher told The Post. “I’m excited for it. … It felt like the situation at St. John’s is the best situation for me.”

St. John’s, which has not won the Big East since 2000, is looking to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019.
