Richard Dreyfuss is back in hot water after a number of theatergoers accused him of embarking on a transphobic, homophobic and misogynistic rant ahead of a Jaws screening at The Cabot in Beverly, Massachusetts.
The actor, who famously played Hooper in Steven Spielberg‘s 1975 shark thriller, reportedly came onto the stage for an audience Q&A wearing a floral dress as a Taylor Swift song played in the background. While footage of his alleged tirade has yet to come out, several social media users who were present at the scene offered their recollections of the incident.
According to one attendee, Dreyfuss spoke highly of his Nuts producer and co-star Barbra Streisand, calling her a “genius” and describing her as “brilliant,” but claimed he never listened to her because she is a woman and women “shouldn’t have that power.” He also allegedly said that women “are so passive and that’s why the movie sucked.”
Dreyfuss then reportedly started speaking about the #MeToo movement before starting “down the road of how you shouldn’t be listening to some 10-year-old who says they want to be a boy instead of a girl,” prompting “most” of the crowd to walk out before the movie even started.
Attendees ultimately vented about their experience on The Cabot’s Facebook page, where one wrote, “People were there to hear about his career. How the hell does the gender identity of children (and his opinions of such) even come up as a topic?” before describing the evening as a “dumpster fire.”
Another said, “It was a night that should have been fun and entertaining but was the opposite, a truly awful night that I paid a lot of money for.”

The Cabot later sent out an apology, noting that Dreyfuss’ comments “were not in line with the values of inclusivity and respect that we uphold at The Cabot,” per Variety.
“We understand that his remarks were distressing and offensive to many of our community members, and for that, we sincerely apologize,” they continued. “At The Cabot, we are committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of our community. The views expressed by Mr. Dreyfuss do not reflect our beliefs, and we do not endorse them in any way.”
They added, “We take full responsibility for the oversight in not anticipating the direction of the conversation and for any discomfort it caused.”
DECIDER has reached out to reps for Dreyfuss for comment, but did not hear back by the time of publication.
