Joe Flacco’s flashback elite performance for the Browns has earned him a starting job for the rest of the season.
Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski announced after Sunday’s 31-27 win over the Jaguars that the 16-year veteran quarterback will continue starting next week against the Bears and moving forward over rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
The 38-year-old Flacco, who appeared in 12 games (nine starts) for the Jets over the previous three seasons, threw for 311 yards and three touchdowns with one interception Sunday against Jacksonville as the Browns improved to 8-5.
Starting quarterback Deshaun Watson is out for the season with a shoulder injury suffered Nov. 12 against the Ravens.
“Well obviously, it looks good when you feel like people have confidence in you,” Flacco said after the game. “I know I’ve been in a bunch of locker rooms but whenever you walk into a locker room, you still wanna gain the respect of everybody and you don’t know if you quite have that until you can go out there and get a win and continue to do it day in and day out.”
Flacco, who quarterbacked the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl title in 2012, had replaced the 2023 fifth-round pick Thompson-Robinson in the starting lineup in last week’s loss to the Rams.
“I think you can see it and feel it a little bit, we have the ability to really start to get over the hump,” Flacco added.
The win over the Jags elevates the Browns to 8-5, where they reside just two games behind the division rival Ravens, who are an AFC-best 10-3.
As of now, Flacco and the Browns would have the top Wild Card spot in the AFC.
The Browns host Chicago next Sunday afternoon.
