ALBANY – Rep. Elise Stefanik will declare her bid for governor after the November elections, and will have a clear path to the Republican nomination, State GOP Chair Ed Cox said Wednesday.
Cox, shortly after he was re-elected to lead Empire State Republicans for another two-year term, told reporters there wouldn’t be a GOP gubernatorial primary this year.
That would anoint Stefanik, the prominent North Country congresswoman, as the party’s nominee to take on incumbent Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul in 2026.
“She just doesn’t want to, in fact sort of get mixed up in the local elections,” Cox said in reference to when Stefanik will opt to officially announce her candidacy.
“Let those happen, let the candidates carry that, let them be highlighted, and then after that she will declare,” Cox said.
“We’re not going to have a primary this year,” he added.
Stefanik has a smooth path to the Republican nomination for governor after Hudson Valley Rep. Mike Lawler bowed out of consideration in July.
Asked for comment, a Stefanik spokesperson referred The Post to an interview on Fox News Radio Wednesday morning where host Brian Kilmeade asked when she would declare.

“After the November elections, Brian,” Stefanik quickly replied.
“You have to make sure that Republicans continue to do well,” she said.
“We’ve made those investments in each of the 62 counties. We have key races,” Stefanik continued, “and after this November I look forward to making my announcement. And we’re getting an outpouring of support all across the state.”
Cox ran unopposed for what will be his seventh term as New York Republican Party chair.
