Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck was taken to a hospital and received stitches after frighteningly being struck in the face by a line drive during Boston’s 15-5 win over the Yankees on Friday night.
Yankees catcher Kyle Higashioka hit a comebacker that knocked Houck to the ground and left his face bloodied.
The liner had an exit velocity of 89.7 mph.
Houck was able to walk off the field under his own power after quickly being surrounded by teammates and trainers, but was holding a towel to his face to cover a large gash.
He raised a fist to the crowd as he walked into the dugout.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that the liner cut him in his cheek area.
“He was conscious the whole time, so that’s good,” Cora told reporters after the game. “He’s got a cut, he’s in the hospital right now getting further tests. Obviously, we’ll know more at the end of the night. But he got lucky.
“He knew where he was right away and he kept saying he was fine.”
Higashioka got an infield single on the play after the ball ricocheted off Houck toward third base.
Houck exited allowing one earned run, one walk and four hits while striking out two batters in four innings pitched.
He owns a 3-6 record this year with a 5.05 ERA.
“Just a scary moment,” teammate Justin Turner said. “To see him go down like that, not sure where it got him. But to see him get up and walk off the field, I didn’t get a chance to talk to him in the clubhouse but a couple of other guys did. He was in pretty good spirits before he went to the hospital to get some scans. I’ll check in on him. Hopefully it’s just a few stiches and he’ll be back out there.”
