Another rotation option for the Mets is now off the board.
Right-hander Lucas Giolito and the Red Sox agreed to a two-year, $38.5 million contract on Friday night, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed.
The deal has an opt-out after the first year.
The Mets had been showing strong interest in Giolito, The Post’s Mike Puma reported earlier this week, but instead, he will try to bounce back in Boston.
The 29-year-old Giolito represented a potential innings eater with high upside but high risk.
He is coming off a season in which he posted a 4.88 ERA with 204 strikeouts in 184 ⅓ innings split between the White Sox, Angels and Guardians.
He had a 3.79 ERA in 21 starts with the White Sox but struggled after being traded, recording ERAs of 6.89 in six starts with the Angels and 7.04 in six starts with the Guardians.
He also led the American League with 41 home runs allowed.
Giolito pitched to a 4.90 ERA across 30 starts in 2022, but in three seasons before that (including the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign), the former first-round pick had accrued a 3.47 ERA with 526 strikeouts in 427 ⅔ innings.
In each season from 2019-2021, he finished in the top 11 of AL Cy Young voting.
As currently constructed, the Mets’ 2024 rotation features Kodai Senga, Jose Quintana, Luis Severino and Adrian Houser.
They made a strong run at Yoshinobu Yamamoto, only to see the Japanese ace land with the Dodgers.
From there, the Mets were expected to pursue shorter-term options to fill their rotation, with Giolito among the top candidates to fill that category via free agency.
With Giolito off the board, other potential free-agent starting options for the Mets include Mike Clevinger, Sean Manaea and Hyun-jin Ryu, among others.
