The Red Sox are making major changes after another last-place finish in the AL East.
On Monday, the team announced the firings of pitching coach Dave Bush and third base/infield coach Carlos Febles, according to The Boston Globe.
The move comes about a week after Red Sox manager Alex Cora said the team intends to improve the coaching of its players.
“We just had a meeting an hour ago with our coaching staff, and the tone of our conversation was we have to find ways to improve our players,” Cora said. “You have to be willing to adjust what we have tried to do the last few years for them to be better.”
When asked if he feels personnel changes would be needed to improve the team, Cora said, “I don’t believe so,” according to Mass Live.
“I think we just have to be better. We have to be willing to go and talk to people and adjust our routines. That’s something we’ve been talking about the whole season,” he said.
Bush was promoted following the 2019 season to oversee the big-league pitchers and notably guided the injury-prone rotation to a comeback in 2021, when they reached the ALCS.
This season, the Red Sox posted a 4.52 ERA (21st in the league), along with a 4.68 ERA from the starters (22nd) with an average of only 4.8 innings a start on their way to a 78-84 record.
Boston’s defensive collapse appeared to contribute to the demise of Febles, who was added to the coaching staff in 2018.

The Red Sox ranked last in outs above average (-50) this season, as well as runs allowed (-40), according to Statcast.
Cora mentioned the shortcomings of 2023 were by no means a result of a lack of trying, but the numbers could have factored into the decision to move on.
“I know people talk about the coaching staff, but the people that followed us the whole time, you guys saw it, we did a lot of things we don’t usually do. It didn’t work. It’s not lack of trying, lack of effort, lack of knowledge. You’ve just got to keep trying to find ways to be better and it’s on us,” Cora said.
