NextImg:Red Sox, Brewers clear benches after pitcher, coach dispute sparks heated scene

The Brew Crew might be more aptly renamed the Brawl Crew.

The Brewers found themselves in yet another bench-clearing incident Sunday at Fenway Park when first base coach Quintin Berry appeared to spark a little dust-up with the Red Sox, though there appears to be a bit more to the story.

Red Sox pitcher Chris Martin admittedly did not take too kindly to the Brewers bunting twice in the top of the seventh of the 1-1 ballgame, and as he was walking back to the dugout, he mumbled his displeasure within earshot of Berry.

“I probably said some things under my breath that was kind of directed towards that inning, I’ll let ya’ll determine what those things were,” Martin said to reporters. “Heat of the moment. They bunted twice. … I didn’t like it. I know it’s part of the game, but it is what it is. I let them know.”

Berry clearly did not take too kindly to whatever comments Martin made, and he was not shy about getting right near Martin’s face and reacting, which in turn led to two Red Sox players getting involved and the benches and bullpens pouring out onto the field.

No punches were thrown and the situation never seemed to escalate beyond Berry having to be restrained after he became a bit animated.

Cooler heads prevailed and the game continued with the Red Sox eventually scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth, when Jarren Duran hit an RBI single to score Ceddanne Rafaela.

The Red Sox went on to win, 2-1.

The fight wasn’t the best look for Berry and to make it sting a bit more, Duran told NESN that the incident helped amp up the Red Sox.

“Whenever you clear benches it gets everyone a little fired up,” Duran said. “[Martin] was getting everyone hyped up. He was pissed. You never see him like that. He’s always a calm, cool guy.”

Sunday was far from the first time that the Brewers have participated in something like that this season.

They were involved in a massive on-field brawl last month with the Rays that included actual punches being thrown and suspensions being levied.
