Swedish midfielder Gustav Berggren is headed to New York as the newest member of the Red Bulls.

The Red Bulls announced the signing of the 27-year-old midfielder on Wednesday to a 3 ¹/₂-year deal through 2028 with an option for 2029 in a move that helps the MLS club replace the departed Felipe Carballo, who returned to his club in Brazil after his loan expired.

Berggren joins the Red Bulls via RKS Raków Częstochowa (Poland ) after he recorded two goals and five assists during the 2024-25 season.

He started in all 32 league matches that he played in.

“We are excited to add a player like Gustav to our roster,” Red Bulls head of sport Jochen Schneider said in a statement. “He is someone who will bring quality, leadership and a winning mentality to our team, and we are happy to have him join the club.”

Added Reds Bulls head coach Sandro Schwarz: “Gustav possesses the abilities that we want in our central midfielders, and we are pleased to have him on our team. He will be a great asset to our midfield, and we are looking forward to having the opportunity to work with him.”

Berggren appeared in 105 total matches with Raków Częstochowa, scoring five goals and seven assists.

The two sides agreed to the deal earlier this month, and it is believed to be worth around $2.1 million, amNewYork reported

Berggren joins fellow Swede Emil Forsberg on the Red Bulls roster this season.

Frosberg is in the middle of his second season with the Red Bulls.

The Red Bulls are holding the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and hoping to make the postseason for a league-record 16th straight time.

Though the Red Bulls have made the playoffs consistently, they only reached the MLS Cup final for the first time since 2008 last season.
