If you thought you’d seen the last of Zack Snyder’s version of Star Wars, aka Rebel Moon, think again. The Rebel Moon director’s cut is coming to Netflix this weekend, and it promises to be much longer, bloodier, and sexier than the original two-part sci-fi epic.
Written and directed by Snyder, Rebel Moon stars Sofia Boutella as Kora. Kora was formerly a brainwashed soldier for the evil Imperium Motherworld, but in the first movie, she becomes a rebel fighter dedicated to defending the farming community that lives on the moon known as Veldt. The first film is about assembling a team, and the second film was about the epic battle, between the rebels and the back-from-the-dead villain, Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein).
The first two films—which were both rated PG-13—were 2 hours and 16 minutes, and 2 hours and 3 minutes, respectively. The combined runtime for the R-rated Rebel Moon‘s director’s cut is over six hours. Are you surprised? After all, the Snyder cut of Justice League was over four hours. You’ll want to plan your weekend accordingly, so here’s what you need to know about the Rebel Moon: Director’s Cut release date.
There is not, technically, a third Rebel Moon movie coming to Netflix. (At least, not anytime soon.) However, there is an extended, R-rated director’s cut of the first two movies coming out on Netflix this week, aka Rebel Moon Part One: Director’s Cut and Rebel Moon Part Two: Director’s Cut.
While these are not “new” movies, the trailer suggests there will be a lot of never-before-seen footage, including a giant robot woman with giant robot nipples. Snyder even came up with new names for the two director’s cuts—Rebel Moon — Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness—but Netflix opted to list the films as simply “Part One: Director’s Cut” and “Part Two: Director’s Cut” on its platform.

Both Rebel Moon Part One: Director’s Cut and Rebel Moon Part Two: Director’s Cut will release on Netflix globally on Friday, August 2.
Both Rebel Moon Part One: Director’s Cut and Rebel Moon Part Two: Director’s Cut will begin streaming on Netflix at 12 a.m. Pacific Time, or 3 a.m. Eastern Time, on the morning of Friday, August 2. That means if you live on the West Coast, you’ll be able to watch the Rebel Moon: Director’s Cut as early as midnight on Thursday night. But you’ll probably want to get some sleep first. It’s sure to be a long one!
