NextImg:Rays’ Brandon Lowe doesn’t think Yankees are ‘worth our time’ after bench-clearing standoffs

The Rays prefer verbal chin music.

Infielder Brandon Lowe mocked the Yankees after the Rays’ 7-4 win on Sunday afternoon, which included four Tampa batters getting hit by pitches and two bench-clearing confrontations.

“Obviously, tempers flare,” Lowe told Bally Sports after the game. “The history we do have with the Yankees, everything that has kind of come through does play a part into it.

“But looking at it, it is a last-place team agains a team that is in contention. They’re trying to ignite something over there. Whatever, not worth our time at this moment. We’re focused on bigger things right now than a little on-field scuff. We need these games.”

That about sums up the Yankees season, doesn’t it?

It is hard to argue with Lowe’s point as the basement-dwelling Yankees are 62-68 and 6 1/2 games behind the fourth-place Red Sox entering Monday’s games.

The Rays are leading the AL wild-card race and are two games behind the Orioles for first place in the AL East.

About the only area the Yankees do lead the Rays in is hit batsmen in their season.

The season series ends with the Yankees hitting 12 Rays batters, compared to two the other way.

However — much more crucially — the Rays won eight of the 13 games between the two teams this season.

The benches cleared twice in the eighth inning after Albert Abreu plunked Randy Arozarena.

The outfielder noted that he was hit with the count at 3-1 and that he thought Abreu did it “on purpose.”

“Every time I get hit from here on out, it’s gonna bother me because it’s something that occurs too many times,’’ Arozarena said.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone disputed the idea.

“I get their frustration,’’ Boone said. “Nothing’s happening on purpose. Some tempers got going.”

The Yankees continue their road trip Monday night against the Tigers, while the Rays continue their playoff push with a series against the Marlins that starts Tuesday night.
