As their right wing options continue to dwindle, the Rangers padded their depth on defense.
The Blueshirts acquired Chad Ruhwedel from the Penguins on Friday in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, the team announced.
Ruhwedel, a right-handed defenseman, provides a safety net on the right side of the backend behind Adam Fox, Jacob Trouba and Braden Schneider.
An undrafted defenseman out of UMass Lowell, Ruhwedel signed with the Sabres and bounced between the NHL and AHL through his first four seasons of professional hockey.
He then signed with the Penguins as a free-agent in July 2016 and has been with Pittsburgh ever since.
In 47 games this season, Ruhwedel has one goal and three assists while averaging 12:32 of ice time per contest.
Ruhwedel is in the final season of a two-year deal that carries a cap hit of $800,000.
