With progress made on the Rangers’ local TV situation — word is, they may get a one-time payment of about $90M — they seem likely to be back in play for Jordan Montgomery. A reunion always made sense since Montgomery is their Astros killer.
The Phillies also are a possibility for Montgomery. The Angels, who should have money to spend, should be, too.
The Rangers and Phillies both make sense for star closer Josh Hader, but he’s been connected more to the Dodgers. The Yankees seem focused on a starter, for now. But he’d be nice fallback option if they can’t land Montgomery (not that likely) or Blake Snell.
The Mets are linked to Hyun-Jin Ryu, Sean Manaea and Shota Imanaga. The Pirates, Red Sox, Padres and Nationals also are in the mid-tier starter market, which also includes James Paxton.
Imanaga has a fine market, but the Yankees are concerned about his flyball rate in Yankee Stadium.
J.D. Martinez looks like a possible fit for the Angels and D-Backs. He’d also make sense for the Mets. It’d be nice to finally have a legit middle-of-the-order guy to protect Pete Alonso. Keep hearing the Cubs will be after Alonso when he’s free.
The Brewers, Pirates and Mariners — three of Carlos Santana’s former teams in the last couple years — are showing interest in Santana.
The prospect-heavy Orioles make the most sense for Dylan Cease, but the sides were still apart in talks.
