The Rangers selected right winger Gabriel Perreault with the No. 23 pick in the first round of the 2023 NHL Draft Wednesday night in Nashville, Tenn.
Perreault, who broke Toronto star Auston Matthew’s United States National Team Development Program’s all-time single-season scoring record this past season, is the first right winger the Rangers have drafted in the first round since Kaapo Kakko in 2019.
The forward, who is a dual citizen, is a left shot but usually plays on the right side, where the Blueshirts have been deficient in players for some time.
During the 2022-23 season, Perrault had a breakout year and posted a staggering 132 points (53 goals and 79 assists) in 63 games with the U.S. National Under-18 Team.
He was part of the program’s lethal top line, along with Will Smith (selected fourth overall by the Sharks) and Ryan Leonard (selected eighth overall by the Capitals).
