NextImg:Rangers’ power-play experience helping units click to start season

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — After scoring all three of their regulation goals on the power play in Saturday night’s overtime win over the Canucks, the Rangers have 10 man-advantage tallies in their first eight games of the season for the first time since the 2009-10 campaign.

Two of the Rangers’ power-play goals on Saturday, however, came during a five-on-three advantage.

The Blueshirts have now scored three tallies when they have the two-man edge, which led the entire NHL entering Sunday’s slate of games.

“I think I’ve been harping on this for some time though; we’ve played together for some time,” said Mika Zibanejad, who scored his first goal of the season with the man-advantage. “So we know what we’re capable of doing and just got to keep going.”

Operating at 34.5 percent, the Rangers’ power play was ranked second in the NHL — behind only the Devils (40 percent) — while averaging 3.63 man-advantage opportunities per game and 5:18 of power-play time per game.

Mika Zibanejad said the Rangers’ power play has been clicking because of their experience skating with each other.

“Those guys have been together for a little bit now and there’s some familiarity with that,” Rangres head coach Peter Laviolette said. “I thought they did a really good job, you know, wanting to tie it back up, but then to get the lead back, as well.”

Blake Wheeler will play the Jets, the team he spent the past 13 years with, for the first time on Monday.

Defenseman Adam Fox recorded his third multi-point game of the season with a goal and an assist on Saturday.

His three power-play tallies on the season established a single-season high for Fox, whose 10 points (three goals, seven assists) led all NHL defensemen entering Sunday’s slate of games.

The Rangers’ defensemen have recorded 23 points, which is tied for the fourth most in the NHL.

They have made up 33.3 percent of all the Blueshirts’ points recorded so far this season, the highest mark in the league.

The Rangers were off on Sunday as they flew to Winnipeg, but they are expected to return to the ice Monday morning for a skate before they face the Jets at Canada Life Center that night.
