NextImg:Rangers’ Mika Zibanejad ‘day-to-day’ after leaving scrimmage with injury

Mika Zibanejad left Sunday’s intra-team scrimmage with an undisclosed upper-body injury and did not return for the remainder of practice, according to multiple reports that came out of MSG Training Center.

A team spokesman for the Rangers classified the club’s No. 1 center as “day-to-day,” while head coach Peter Laviolette couldn’t offer many more details as the injury had just occurred when he spoke with reporters.

It is unclear how long Zibanejad will be sidelined, but it’s safe to assume that the Rangers will err on the side of caution when it comes to the 30-year-old.

Zibanejad has missed just one regular-season game over the last three seasons, and it wasn’t due to injury.

The Rangers rested Zibanejad toward the end of the 2021-22 season in preparation for the playoffs.

The Rangers have been fortunate on the injury front the last few seasons, but Zibanejad’s injury serves as a reminder of just how thin the depth is in certain areas of the lineup.

There are still nearly three weeks until the Rangers’ opening night in Buffalo, so Zibanejad will have some time to heal if it is a significant injury.

Forward Brennan Othmann did not participate in practice Sunday due to an upper-body injury. The Rangers have deemed the 20-year-old day-to-day.

Five projected regular skaters for the Rangers — Filip Chytil, Alexis Lafreniere, Jonathan Quick, Braden Schneider and Jimmy Vesey — competed in Sunday’s first preseason game at TD Garden in Boston.

Bubble players Zac Jones, Alex Belzile, Riley Nash and Ben Harpur were also in the first-game group lineup.

The rest of the Rangers lineup featured Jonny Brodzinski, Will Cuylle, Brett Berard, Louis Domingue, Adam Edstrom, Ty Emberson, Adam Edstrom, Ryder Korczak, Jake Leschyshyn, Connor Mackey, Matthew Robertson and Adam Sykora.

Brandon Scanlin was listed in the game group, but did not play.

Cuylle skated on the first line with Lafreniere and Chytil, while Schneider slotted alongside Mackey on defense.

Vesey, Chytil and Lafreniere served as assistant captains during the first preseason game.

The Rangers trimmed their training camp roster to 48 players Sunday.

Maxim Barbashev, Seth Barton, Zach Berzolla, Ryan McCleary, Sahil Panwar and Olof Lindbom were assigned to the Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Joe Arntsen, Bryce McConnell-Barker, Max McCue, James Petrovski and Dylan Roobroeck will return to their respective junior teams.

Additionally, goalie Brad Arvanitis was released from his professional tryout.
