NextImg:Rangers hoping they have formula to replicate last year’s Game 7 magic

Here are the Rangers, back in a familiar spot, looking to advance to the second round with a Game 7 victory.

But these are not the same Rangers who went 2-0 under such circumstances last season.

The squad that scored in overtime to complete the rally from down 3-1 in the series against the Penguins, and then won against the previously-undefeated-at-home Hurricanes in the next round, is not the same as the one that will take the ice for the Battle of the Hudson’s winner-take-all Game 7 against the Devils Monday night in Newark.

This team has been in this spot before, whether it was with the Rangers organization or another, and they know what to expect.

This team has the likes of Vladimir Tarasenko, Patrick Kane and Vincent Trocheck this time around.

This team is supposed to be building off of last year’s team.

“It’s a different team than we had last year,” Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant said after practice Sunday afternoon in Tarrytown. “There’s no doubt. It’s a complete different team. We don’t play the same style as we did last year. We got skill, we got talent and we got to play the way we play. Last year’s team was different, it wasn’t as skilled. It worked hard, it competed hard, but it was a different team.”

The Rangers were the Cinderella team of last year, in which they exceeded expectations in both the regular season and the playoffs, but they are now tasked with closing out the Cinderella team of this year.

This first-round series between the cross-river rivals has seemingly been split up into three parts.

The Rangers owned the first part, the Devils owned the second part and then both clubs were competitive in Game 6 Saturday night.

Much of the same is expected for Game 7, especially considering how the Devils responded to falling behind two games to none early on.

Sure, a majority of the Rangers’ lineup were in this position twice last season and prevailed.

That does not mean a win will come any easier.

These are the games where team’s can cement new legacies and capture their own prestige.

That is the opportunity this year’s Rangers have in front of them.

“You’re always going to get pieces of former teams,” said Trocheck, who faced the Rangers in the second round with the Hurricanes last season. “There’s never complete turnover 100 percent. You take the positives from last year and you try to draw from those and create a new identity.”

Devils head coach Lindy Ruff would not reveal his starting goaltender for Game 7, but it’s relatively safe to assume they will come back with rookie Akira Schmid, despite the fact the 22-year-old was pulled after giving up five goals on Saturday.

The Rangers were finally able to pressure Schmid the way they did Vitek Vanecek, the Devils’ initial starter in Games 1 and 2.

Though it will have been for nothing if the Blueshirts don’t come out with the same intensity as they did when the Devils had a chance to end the series.

“This game won’t mean much if you can’t win the last one,” Rangers captain Jacob Trouba said after staving off elimination.

The Rangers of last year did it.

It will be up to this year’s Rangers to follow suit.
