NextImg:Rangers’ Filip Chytil suffers suspected fractured cheekbone at World Championship

Filip Chytil is resting at his home in Czechia after leaving the IIHF World Championship tournament in the aftermath of taking a stick to the side of his face in the first period of Team Czechia’s May 14 match against Kazakhstan in Riga, Latvia.

The exact nature of the injury to the 23-year-old center is unclear — there is suspicion that he sustained a fractured cheekbone — but the Rangers, whose medical team has been in touch with Chytil, are saying that this will not have any impact regarding the offseason and training camp.

“Upper body injury,” is the official designation.

All that is missing is the obligatory, “Month-to-month.”

Chytil is coming off a breakout season in which he recorded 22 goals and 45 points before a disappointing series against the Devils in which No. 72 posted just one goal (a Game 1 empty-netter) and four points.

He made a post on Saturday to his Chytil_12 Instagram account that would be translated as follows:

“After being eliminated from this year’s Play-offs, which still annoys me about how it turned out, I did not hesitate to join the national team. I believed that I could help the team to achieve one of the medals after a year, preferably the most valuable one.

“I’m very sad that I only managed to play one full match and one third of the next one. I was hoping that the injury I suffered wasn’t so serious and I could continue the tournament further. I have done my best to get back into the game but unfortunately it got to a point where I knew it can’t go anymore.

“Nevertheless, thank you all for your support and I continue to cheer for the guys!”
