NextImg:Rangers castoff Vitali Kravtsov returning to KHL after Canucks stint

Former first-round pick Vitali Kravtsov is leaving the NHL after a disappointing tenure with the Rangers.

The 23-year-old winger has reached a two-year deal with his former team, Traktor Chelyabinsk of the KHL, according to The Province.

The Rangers gave up on Kravtsov in February after he requested a trade, sending him to the Canucks in a salary dump to create cap space for the acquisition of Patrick Kane.

There were high hopes for Kravtsov after the Rangers took him No. 9 overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, but amid tensions with the team, he ended up producing only five goals and five assists in 48 games for the Blueshirts.

Kravtsov returned to Russia in 2019 after a brief stint with AHL Hartford, where he played after not making the Rangers out of training camp.

He didn’t make his NHL debut until April of 2021 against the Buffalo Sabres.

Kravtsov finished that season with two goals and two assists in 20 games.

The winger then refused to report to Hartford for the beginning of the 2021-22 season and returned home to Russia, later getting loaned to Traktor Chelyabinsk.

Kravtsov rejoined the Rangers for training camp in 2022, admitting he had to “redeem” himself after making “a lot of noise.”

But he failed to earn a consistent spot in the lineup, recording three goals and three assists in 28 games before he was dealt to Vancouver for forward Will Lockwood and a 2026 seventh-round selection.

Kravtsov recorded just one goal and one assist in 16 games for the Canucks and was scratched in five of Vancouver’s final eight games.

As a restricted free agent, the Canucks can still retain Kravtsov’s NHL rights if they give him a qualifying offer.

But for now, Kravtsov is leaving the NHL behind.
