Randy Moss smiled from ear to ear on Sunday as he rejoined his ESPN colleagues on the set of “Sunday NFL Countdown” following his battle with cancer last year.
Seated between Rex Ryan and Alex Smith, the Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver, 48, took in the moment as co-host Mike Greenberg opened the program with a video of Moss ringing a bell to signify that his treatment for Stage 2 bile duct cancer was complete.
“It was just a great day, man, shout out and love to my doctors, I remember seeing you guys on Super Bowl Sunday, and that was one of my goals to get here, and now all my treatment is over, ringing the bell, back with the family, man,” Moss said as the group, including Tedy Bruschi, celebrated at the desk.
This moment has been a long time coming for Moss, who stepped away from ESPN in December to focus on his health.
The legendary wideout, who played 14 seasons in the league, opened up about his health battle Thursday in a candid interview on “Good Morning America.”
“I just think that when you live your life, you know, a certain type of way of, you know, eating right, taking care of your health, and all of a sudden you get diagnosed with cancer … I was overwhelmed,” said Moss, who experienced symptoms including yellow eyes from jaundice and dark-colored urine.
“It hit like a ton of bricks.”
Moss declared in mid-December that he is a “cancer survivor,” disclosing in an Instagram video that he underwent a six-hour procedure in the wake of the diagnosis.
“I did have cancer,” he said. “They found it in the bowel duct, right in between the pancreas and the liver. So my doctors … they went in, I had a six-hour surgery. Dr. Martini, you’re the man, I had a Whipple procedure. I am forever grateful.”
Two months later, Moss appeared on “Sunday NFL Countdown” ahead of Super Bowl 2025, where his NFL peers, including Justin Jefferson and Tom Brady, welcomed him back with an emotional tribute.
“Y’all already know it’s the big crybaby here,” Moss said. “I can’t do it alone and I really thank y’all. … It’s been hard, but I’ve got a lot of love and a lot of people believing in me, man. So I’m happy to be here.”
Moss is largely known for his time with the Vikings and Patriots, and also had runs with the 49ers, Raiders, and Titans.
