Randall Cobb’s illegal blindside block in the opening quarter of the Jets’ preseason finale prompted a fitting reaction from Aaron Rodgers and Cobb’s wife, Aiyda, who is expecting a fine in the mail soon.
During the Jets’ first drive against the Giants on Saturday, Cobb leveled safety Bobby McCain as tight end Tyler Conklin tried to advance the ball upfield.
He pleaded his case with a referee.
He later tried explaining to Jets teammates that he’d “blacked out” and hadn’t hit another player like that recently.
But that didn’t help the 33-year-old.
“We’ll probably get a flag in the mail here soon,” Aiyda said during the episode, while remarking that she thought it was “a great block” despite the call.
“Oh man, I hope he doesn’t get fined for that.”
Rodgers, who spent 10 years playing alongside Cobb in Green Bay, messed with Cobb on multiple occasions after the penalty.
“F–king Cobb-y lost all his f–king training camp money,” Rodgers said during the episode from a Jets huddle.
“What’re you doing? This ain’t 2014.”
Cobb’s path from Green Bay to the Jets has been referenced at times — and in part, mostly showing Aiyda and their two children — throughout the “Hard Knocks” show, which released its penultimate HBO episode on Tuesday night.
His overlap with Rodgers has been a constant, though.
He nearly retired after the 2022 campaign in Green Bay, when the viral moment of him leaving Lambeau Field side-by-side with Rodgers would’ve been a final image of his career.
Instead, Cobb moved to the Jets and joined a crowded wide receiver room that already featured Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, Mecole Hardman and others — though targets opened up when Corey Davis suddenly retired Wednesday, a moment that didn’t make this week’s episode.
Cobb brought his family with him, too, and in a trailer ahead of last week’s episode, Cobb and Aiyda sat with their two children at a picnic table and informed them that they were expecting another child.
“You know how we do the Cobb Mob before bed every night? How many hands are normally in?” Cobb asked his two children, before adding that “it’s going to be five hands real soon.”
So when Rodgers and Cobb spoke with a referee later in Tuesday’s episode, Rodgers joked about Cobb taking the penalty even as the Jets “talk about playing smart” — and especially because Cobb has “another baby on the way.”
“He said he’ll pay for it, though,” Cobb replied to the referee during the episode, glancing toward Rodgers.
“He said he’s gonna take care of it.”
