Randall Cobb thought about hanging them up this summer, too.
While reacting to the sudden announcement Wednesday by fellow wide receiver Corey Davis, the 33-year-old Cobb said he’d also considered retirement before signing a one-year deal worth $3 million to reunite with Rodgers with the Jets.
“For me, yeah, I did have that thought,” Cobb said after Wednesday’s practice. “I did think about it, and in the end I knew I wasn’t ready. I wasn’t ready to hang it up. I knew I wasn’t done playing. I have so much love for this game and I know I can’t play until I’m 60, but as long as I feel like I can still do it, I’m gonna come out and do it.”
Cobb, a teammate of Aaron Rodgers for 10 seasons in Green Bay, had 34 receptions for 417 yards and one touchdown in 13 games for the Packers last season.
A softer new FieldTurf core system was installed earlier this year at MetLife Stadium.
While Rodgers will see his first game action as a Jet in Saturday’s game against the Giants, he already is praising the new setup.
“I’m a fan of grass, for sure. Got to admit that. I like wearing seven studs and playing on grass, but I feel like the field … it’s supposedly the newest and the greatest,” Rodgers said on Tuesday. “There’s obviously been a lot of conversation around grass field compared to turf field, but I feel like the other night, it’s been one of the best surfaces I’ve seen that’s artificial.
“It’s our surface, so we’re going to enjoy it. I’ve always felt a little faster on turf, so I look forward to that.”
Rodgers was on the sidelines for the Jets’ home preseason game against the Bucs last weekend.
Asked what he’s hoping to see from Rodgers and the Jets against the Giants, coach Robert Saleh said, “To come out healthy, that’s it. Win, lose doesn’t matter. Just go out there and let everybody feel what this offense is gonna feel like. And the defense, what it’s gonna feel like again.”
