NextImg:Rams’ Cam Akers ‘confused’ after being scratched for Week 2

Cam Akers’ future with the Rams is again in question after the running back was made a healthy scratch for Sunday’s game against the 49ers.

Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer was the first to report that Akers will be inactive and added the Rams are trying to move Akers in a trade.

It’s not the first time L.A. has looked to trade the Florida State product, doing so ahead of last season’s trade deadline, but holding onto Akers when they didn’t get a good enough offer.

At the time, they held him out of practice.

According to The Athletic, that situation could be traced back to miscommunication about Akers’ role.

It looks like the communication here was fumbled as well, based on Akers’ public reaction to the news.

“I’m just as confused as everybody else,” he tweeted Sunday, along with a shrugging emoji. “I’m blessed though.”

Akers ran for 786 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

In Week 1, he scored but averaged just 1.3 yards on 22 carries.

Through 30 regular-season games, Akers — who was selected 52nd overall in the 2020 NFL Draft — has amassed 1,443 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns.

Judging by the current state of the running back market, with no movement on a Jonathan Taylor deal following a contract dispute with the Colts, it’s hard to see the Rams getting much for Akers.

But perhaps their asking price has lowered from last year, or perhaps circumstances may force things to change around the league.
