After Kliff Kingsbury pulled out of the running for the Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator position, the team is now reportedly set to hire Luke Getsy, the former Chicago Bears’ OC, who was fired by the Bears last month.
The 39-year-old Getsy was among a group of five known candidates up for the Raiders job under head coach Antonio Pierce, after Pierce had the interim tag removed following the regular season.
Pierce took over for the fired Josh McDaniels when McDaniels was fired midseason.
Among the other coaches considered for the Raiders’ OC position were Alex Van Pelt, who took the same job with the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers receivers coach Mike Sullivan and UCLA head coach Chip Kelly, as well as Kingsbury, who is also being considered for the Washington Commanders’ OC job.
Pierce said he wanted an offensive coordinator that would enable the Raiders to “run the football.”
While with the Bears and quarterback Justin Fields, Getsy ran an offense that led the NFL in rushing in 2022 (177.3 yards per game) and was second last season (141.1).
But Chicago also struggled in the passing game, finishing dead last in passing offense two years ago at 177.3 yards per game and 27th last season (182.1).
Getsy was let go after Bears management opted to keep head coach Matt Eberflus, but also get rid of much of his staff on the offensive side of the ball.
The Raiders had three different starters in 2023, beginning with Jimmy Garappolo (six starts), Aidan O’Connell (10 starts) and Brian Hoyer (one start).
In the market for a new QB, there is a reported possibility the Raiders could trade for Fields.
During a lackluster season with the Bears, Fields said “coaching” was the reason for his “robotic” play.
And Eberflus noted “the growth and the development of the offense, to me, needed to be better than it was.”
The Bears have the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
