There won’t be a 15th French Open title for Rafael Nadal this year.
The clay court master announced on Thursday that he is withdrawing from the French Open as he battles a lingering hip injury that has impacted him since January.
Nadal, 36, won his 14th title at Roland Garros a year ago, defeating Casper Ruud in a dominant finals performance.
Nadal, who also won the Australian Open last year, saw his title defense end in Melbourne with a second-round loss to Mackenzie McDonald.
Nadal was hampered by the hip injury at the time has not returned to the court since.
Nadal made the announcement at his tennis academy in Manacor, Spain.
The French Open begins on May 28.
