Rachel Zegler had some choice words for those hating on her new movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The actress took to her Twitter account over the weekend, where she called critics “senselessly mean” and assured her followers that the film is “really good,” despite what they may have to say.
Zegler — who plays Greek goddess Anthea in the DC sequel — posted a handful of behind-the-scenes photos from the movie, which she captioned, “Hey our film is actually really good! But mostly I just absolutely loved making it and the people I met whilst doing so :) go see it! Give it a chance. We have an 85% audience score for a reason.”
She added, “Some people out there and just being… senselessly mean. And it’s unnecessary. And I know, I know, ‘If you can’t handle the heat…’ and all that nonsense, and you’re right.”
After reiterating that the film is “actually very good,” Zegler pointed out, “It’s just cool to hate on fun nowadays. That’s okay. We’re good.”
Shazam: Fury of the Gods had an underwhelming opening weekend, bringing in a mere $30.5 million at the domestic box office, in comparison to its predecessor’s $53.5 million, per The Hollywood Reporter. On Rotten Tomatoes, it scored a 53% from critics — much less than the original film’s 90% score. However, fans seemed to appreciate it a bit more as it earned an 88% audience score.
This isn’t the first time Zegler — who made her big-screen debut in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story — has made headlines for her part in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
Just last week, she told The Hollywood Reporter that she joined the DC universe because she “needed a job.” The actress revealed, “The reality is, we’re in the middle of a pandemic and I was not working and I couldn’t get a job for the life of me, because West Side Story hadn’t come out yet.”
However, she noted that she “absolutely adore[s] this movie,” and that she’s “so lucky” to have been cast in the part.
